Method and System for Database Transaction Log Extraction
Abstract:
Many database configurations use a maximum amount of transaction log space for an active transactional workload. This configuration helps to maintain log data locally for efficient roll back and recovery. This active workload can comprise a single transaction or many transactions running for various lengths of time. Each transaction may write small or large amounts of data.
Due to this variance in a transaction's length of time and volume of log data written, the active workload can exhaust the configured transaction log space, i.e., transaction log full. When this happens, an active transaction can no longer write new log data.

An Autonomic Method to Start, Stop, and Limit a Process Extracting Data from Transaction Logs in a Database System to Prevent Running Out of Limited Disk Space Given to the Transaction Logs
Abstract:
Advanced Log Space Management (ALSM) helps to minimize application failures caused by log full errors as the result of a long running transaction holding back the active log space. This is particularly useful if such a long running transaction does not generate much transaction log data in comparison to other concurrently running transactions.
ALSM needs to have a defined set of criteria to select qualifying log records and to control when extraction starts and finishes. This process is called throttling. Throttling is also responsible for limiting the amount of system resources used by extraction, especially system CPU or disk resources.

Method and System for Building a Database from Backup Data Images - (PDF format ~984KB)
Abstract: Building a database from stored backup data images. In one aspect, an identification
of a target image is received, the target image including a copy of a logical storage unit of data
from a previous database and description information that describes the previous database. The target
image holds a copy of a subset of the data of the previous database. A received list has at least one
desired logical storage unit of data from the previous database to be included in a built database.
The desired logical storage unit is restored from at least one stored data image to the built database
using the description information in the target image. Other aspects include the target image being a
database image, and the desired logical storage units of data being a subset of database data.
During my four years of study in Computer Science at the University of Toronto, I wrote a
few larger scaled papers on various subjects. Since I was in the co-op program, I
also had two work terms in which I was required to write a work term report analyzing the
job and technology I worked with that term.
These can be found below:
Work Term Report #1 - Summer 1998 - An IBM ADSM Experience - (PDF format ~308 KB) - a report I wrote as part of my co-op requirement after my first work term at IBM Canada
Work Term Report #2 - Summer 1999 - Broadband Access: High-Speed Alternatives - (PDF format ~898 KB) - a report I wrote as part of my co-op requirement after my second work term at IBM Canada
Report on Software Piracy - (PDF format ~320 KB) - a term paper I wrote for my 4th year class - Computers in Contemporary Society
Report on Quality of Service (QoS) and End-to-End Network Performance - (PDF format ~3.35 MB) - a term paper I wrote for my 4th year class - Computer Networks
Comments? Please feel free to let me know your thoughts and/or opinions on any of these papers using my FEEDBACK forum.
