Drama at the ACC Ends in Shootout  (March 15, 2006)

So late Monday I got  asked by my friend, Rico, if I would be interested in 2 tickets to Tuesday's Leafs game against Boston.  Ever since Buffalo a week or so ago, I have started to follow the push for the playoffs more.  It has been a while since the Leafs have been in this situation and it's interesting to see what will happen.  Plus, I really think Aleen liked the last game so I wanted to try it out again and see if she was for real.

The game started out great in the Leafs favour with us quickly getting a 2-man advantage.  But as of late, we blew that and then Boston took the lead on a power play of their own...go figure.  When I heard the former Leaf, Czerkawski was on Boston's power play I laughed.  With us he was a healthy scratch but with Boston he plays on the power play.

Then a few minutes after Domi got into a scrap.  It was kind of a shock because I haven't seen a fight in a while.  Aleen got all excited because it was her first hockey fight...and she was waiting for one since the last game in Buffalo.

It seemed to wake up the team and shortly after Sundin scored a nice goal after a nice passing sequence with Kaberle.  The excitement didn't last long as quickly the Leafs coughed the puck up and Boston made it 2-1 before the break.

The second period didn't start well as Boston scored an early power play goal.  It was like the first period, the Leafs with no life, but then call-up Ondrus got into another tussle after Tucker got dumped.  Two fights in one game, impressive.  Again, it seemed like the fights got the Leafs pumped and then Allison scored another pretty passing play goal to get within one.

The Leafs were playing decently and the game was flowing up and down.  Defence was not the best and it showed as a Boston player broke through two Leaf defenders to score and make it 4-2.  At this point, the crowd seemed down but then Boston gifted us with three penalties in a row which gave us a 2-man advantage for a whole two minutes.  Sundin scored on the first and then McCabe on the second and by the break it was 4-4.  Now the crowd was jumping again.

The third played out with no more goals but still some good action.  Overtime seemed a bit conservative and when Sundin got clipped in the face and skated off crouched over I was worried.  But, as is his fashion, he got patched up and went back on for the last shift.  He couldn't do anything but Leaf goalie Tellqvist saved us with a last second big save to take it to the shootout.

It was my first shootout and on TV I was always a bit skeptical, but wow...live...whole different atmosphere.  The crowd was into it and so were the players it seemed.  Tucker scored the only goal and as Tellqvist made the last save to win the game, you could see how much the Leafs were into it as the goalie jumped in the air and the bench rushed to him to celebrate.  Haven't seen them so happy after a win in a while.

The night didn't quite end there.  I promised Aleen we would go to Armadillo's afterwards for their steak and cheese nachos.  They are massive and quite good.  But, for two people it is tough to finish.  We talked beforehand about how we wished they had a smaller size.  We ordered the nachos and then afterwards noticed they did have a smaller size!  We tried to get it changed but it was too late.  Needless to say we were stuffed by the end and couldn't finish it.  Lesson learnt!

In any case, I think overall we got our money's worth on the night and a Leafs win to boot.  Good entertainment and fun.  Aleen again looked really into it, especially the dying minutes of the third as the Leafs were killing off a few penalties.  I'm glad she is starting to feel the passion too.
