Place Royale is located in Basse-Ville (Lower Town), a short walk from the stairs and funiculaire that connect to Chateau Frontenac. The centre and heart of lower Quebec City this main square vibrates old city charm. In the 17th and 18th century Place Royale was the town marketplace and centre for business and industry.
The whole square is made up of cobblestone and the adjacent shops and buildings also show their stonework. The Chruch of Notre-Dame des Victoires is the oldest stone church in the city built around 1688 and restored twice since then. The church, in combination with a statue of Louis XIV, is the focal point of the square.
Like many city squares, Place Royale can be often busy with tourists and locals enjoying a casual walk. The square is also home to frequent folk dancing and other random concerts.
