Schloss (Castle) Linderhof was the first palace King Ludwig II built, starting in 1868, during his reign as King of Bavaria. It was however ironic that among the 3 castles/palaces he built (Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof) he lived to see only this palace to completion. The palace was intended to be a cottage, but after years of additions and renovations it became the alluring palace you see now, which has been standing since completed in 1878.
Linderhof is a striking palace which is located high up on a mountain far in the woods. You feel a sense of wonder as you walk through the woods, unknown to what lies ahead. The palace is not immense, it is actually quite small and quaint, but with the massive waterbed and fountain sitting in front of the palace it is truly stunning and does give the palace a remarkable appeal.
Inside the palace are heavy amounts of gold furnishings, ornate drapes and limestone decor. The rooms are elaborate and suited the King's particular needs. From the King's bedroom one can look out at an elongated creek with waterfall that helped keep the palace cool in the summer months. His outside garden is striking and fits with the rest of the engaging palace. This is a good visit and the experience is notable, so if you get a chance to see it, it is worth the trip.
