This three floor art gallery attracts enthusiasts of the post impressionism movement, as this was Vincent Van Gogh's most prominent style. His artistic flare spanned ten years until his death in 1890.
There are numerous ways to enjoy this art gallery. Audio headsets are available for purchase (4 euros/person) or free pamphlets can be picked up at the front desk to help learn more about each individual piece of art. Guided tours from one of the trained professionals are also available for those who want a more advanced medium or you can simply enjoy the exhibits at your own pace, as we did, and simply observe. Each piece of art has a small blurb discussing what is being viewed.
The artwork is set up to follow the progression of the different phases of Van Gogh's life. The collection starts with his earlier works from the 1880s, which some considered grim, and moves towards his paintings from his time in Paris, where he slowly started to show more colour and passion. His work also began to use more shades and his techniques had evolved.
By 1888 one can see Van Gogh at his most alluring point, as this was the time he painted the landscapes most well known to his famous name. Paintings of still life with lots of colour filled his canvasses. Although some considered Van Gogh a genius painter, he suffered from stages of madness, which eventually led to him committing suicide in 1890.
All these art pieces that symbolize the segments of Van Gogh's life can be found in the permanent collection of the museum.
The fee for adults is 10 euros per person. I think the price is a little steep considering some of Van Gogh's greatest paintings are not even included in the permanent collection, however some of the famous ones that are included are Irises, Vase with 15 Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles and many other landscapes and self portraits. They are some of his great pieces, so if you enjoy art you will enjoy the gallery.
The museum is open everyday from 10am-6pm and extended hours every Friday till 10pm.
