For typical, good tasting German cuisine, you should definitely try Cafe Lebensart. With three locations throughout the city, the one we visited was on Unter der Linden, located steps away from Brandenburg Gate and the former home of an East German government ministry. The interior is laid out like a typical cafe, with a large outdoor terrace that is perfect for the summer time.
We enjoyed the restaurant so much that in our brief stay we visited the restaurant twice, both times enjoying the schnitzel dinner because it was just too amazing to pass up. For 12.50 euros you get two good-sized portions of schnitzel, non-breaded (Jager style), a side of spaetzle (which are German noodles) very tasty, and a small salad on the end of your plate, which comes with this delicious creamy dressing. On top of that, the plate is covered in a mushroom wine sauce, which complements the meal very nicely.
To accompany the meal, one must try a Berliner Weiss, which is a specialty beer local to Berlin. It is the same as a normal beer, except a shot of Raspberry syrup is added to sweeten it up and give it a red colour. There is also a green version that is made with a kind of mint. It is certainly a must try when visiting Berlin.
Overall, this restaurant/cafe is a great way to enjoy a fine meal in this historic city. Since its location is right on the main street, you can sit outside while enjoying your meal and view the sights and sounds of the city centre.
