For a sweeter taste of Berlin, you have to try the famous Berliner Weiss beer found exclusively in Berlin. In its normal form a Berliner Weiss pales in comparison to other German wheat beers, but what makes it special is the addition of a shot of fruity syrup.
Comparable to fruity Belgium beers, a Berliner Weiss takes on a fruity taste, but one that is much sharper and sweeter then its European counterpart. Also, a Berliner Weiss is not as dense as many of the beers from Belgium. Weak in alcohol content, only 2.8 percent, it is the weakest of German beers.
Offered in both rot (raspberry) or grun (woodruff) flavours, Berliner Weiss mit Schuss (with shot) as they say in Berlin, has a distinct and some say overwhelming taste compared to most traditional beers, which is good for those who do not like the bitter taste of beer. Traditionally, this beer is served in a wide, low tumbler and while the flavour is intense, many find it refreshing and best enjoyed in the summer months.
What makes this drink unique is that it is solely offered in the city of Berlin with popular brands being Berliner Kindl and Schultheiss Berliner Weisse. Finding Berliner Weiss outside Berlin or even Germany can be a challenge.
So while in Berlin be brave and try to enjoy a local drink, it's actually quite good. All you have to do is decide which you prefer, rot or grun!
