The Reeperbahn, which is also known as the Red Light District of the North (those from Amsterdam may beg to differ), seems to some as too good to be true. Sex -- legal prostitution -- the Reeperbanhn is certainly an interesting experience for those not used to 'sex on sale' on such a large and blatant scale. But what is it really all about, is it really safe, and are all the rumours you hear really true?
This famous strip is located in Hamburg's St. Pauli district and is a full service, commercialized sex industry. Sex shops, prostitution, peep shows, live sex shows, and more can all be found in the Reeperbahn, and yes, it is all legal. The city's official line is that the Reeperbahn is Hamburg's second-greatest attraction and asset (the first is the port itself).
In the 19th century when all entertainment was banned from the city centre, the people wanted a place where they could bring entertainment back, a place where problems were left behind. Thus, the first theatre opened in St. Pauli in 1842, and by the 1860's sailors would dock at the booming port and use the local entertainment to simply have a good time.
Today, the business of St. Pauli has become one that is apparent to everyone. The "in your face" sales approach is noticeable beyond a doubt. Women stand on street corners and offer to sell themselves to the men passing by. You will undoubtedly see most of these women talking to men trying to make a deal. Bartering with them is very common, but you do need to be aware of what you are getting. Because the sex is legalized its "safe" to get involved, however what you get for your dollar is up to you. It's been known that women and even the staff at certain theatres will take advantage of you in order to lure you in, so it's imperative that you feel comfortable and know what you're getting yourself into.
