In another part of the district along Herbertstrasse, the sex is a bit more exclusive and expensive. This is where you will find the "real" Red Light District as the women sit behind glass windows displaying their charm in an attempt to lure in potential clients. Picture it as a different form of window-shopping. The city has declared this section to be open only to those of legal age (18+) and so you will know you have arrived as there is an 8-foot wall erected on either side of the strip to prevent wandering eyes from seeing what goes on inside. The street and selection is much smaller in scale to Amsterdam.
For erotic theatre, as well as many bars and discos, at the end of the Reeperbahn you will find the street Grosse Freiheit, which ironically translates into "Great Freedom". For some they will find the entire Reeperbahn district as an example of great freedom in terms of choice, morals and attitudes. The theatres here involve acts of nearly every kind of sexual expression, be it joyful or not. One thing for sure, there is always a lot of action in this area.
It's a unique experience walking along the Reeperbahn because most North Americans are use to being shielded away from open sex and prostitution. Seeing it so blatantly advertised and endorsed is a culture shock to say the least. But is it worth a visit? Sure. For those who are curious you will probably find everything you imagined, while for others this part of town offers a look into a part of the city's history. Either way, make sure to take a nap before your visit, most nights go late.
