One of the largest breweries in Munich and a staple in the city core, the Augustiner Brewery has been perfecting its craft since 1328. With several taverns located throughout the city, the main spot is located right by the Marienplatz. The interior has dark wood panels and white carved plaster ceilings, which gives it a traditional Bavarian look, although the tavern has been around for less than a century. The location claims to be the same site where the first beers were made.
The building is quite large and can hold many rowdy patrons. Traditional seating, as well as communal seating can be found. With its central location the place can be busy at times with people wandering in and out -- some staying, some just looking around and some who use the public washroom. With that, service can be very casual and slow, so be prepared to dictate the pace with your server. Beers are a little more than other places and the food offered is traditional.
Not too far outside the Marienplatz and west of the Hauptbahnhof is another Augustiner tavern we visited at Landsbergerstr. 19. A smaller venue with a more casual and relaxing feel. The beer is cheaper and we found the food to be much better. Plus, in the summer time you can sit by the open windows and enjoy the nice weather outside.
Check their main web site to find a location nearby.
