Hailed as "A Key West Tradition", Sloppy Joe's is known as the supposed hangout spot for Ernest Hemmingway during his time in the Keys. The bar pays tribute to this by hosting annual Ernest Hemmingway look-alike contests.
The bar has been a staple of the town since 1933. Since 1937 it has been at its current location on the corner of Duval and Greene. Any stop in Key West isn't complete without a pit stop at this saloon.
A relatively large establishment that reminds one of saloons from the old-West, the bar's old wooden interior, cracked-tile floor and ceiling fans give the ensuing patrons a feel for its history. The long curving bar shows evidence of the many visitors who have sat down for a drink. Surprisingly, the bathrooms are modern and clean, compared to the bar itself.
Sloppy Joe's does offer some good drinks, offering, "generous pours, 20% more". They advertise their "award winning" Sloppy Rita, a concoction of tequila, and fruit juices. We tried the strawberry daiquiri, which is one of the better ones I have tasted.
Live music is also offered daily/nightly. The one time we visited, in the late afternoon, it seemed like someone from the crowd was singing songs with lyrics that were somewhat questionable, but humourous. It all adds to the quirky and unique experience the bar is known for and patrons enjoy.
