The impressive and thundering Canadian Horseshoe Falls are awe-inspiring from above, but ever wonder what it would be like from near the bottom or from behind the gallons of water falling daily?
The Journey Behind the Falls experience located at the Table Rock House Plaza gives visitors the opportunity to take elevators down near the base where tunnels that extend 46 metres behind the falls allow visitors a view through open cave portals at the water cascading down in front of them.
There is also an observation deck, closed during the winter months because of ice, which allows visitors a chance to see the falls in their entirety. In the summer time, souvenir rain ponchos are given out to protect visitors from the mist.
The cost is $12 CAN for adults and maybe cheaper ($9) in the winter because of the closed observation area. The tour is self-guided with factual pieces of information throughout the tunnels, most we found interesting. There are also audio sets available in different languages.
We visited in March, and to be honest the tour sounds more exciting then it really is. The observation deck was closed as expected, except for a small area that lets you see the falls from the side, which was probably the best part. The tunnels are cold, and the portals are pretty much full of ice and the view is worth less then the noise, which isn't saying much. With the observation deck open, I could see in the summer time this tour being a bit more exciting.
Anyhow, for some, curiosity will get the best of them, so go in open-minded and enjoy one of the world's natural wonders.
