During the summer months, in the cozy tourist town of Fenelon Falls, you'll be surprised to find a restaurant serving authentic German dishes. In business for nearly 20 years, the Chatterbox Restaurant is a casual stroll away from the falls and offers patrons hearty meals for decent prices.
From the outside the restaurant looks like a house, but inside it feels like you stepped into a Bavarian tavern. Surrounded by wood furnishings and trinkets galore, the restaurant gives off a warm and hospitable feeling. Not overly large, but don't let that fool you as their meals are the exact opposite.
We came for lunch where a typical German menu is offered as well as 4 specials for the day. Aleen ordered her typical schnitzel served with potato salad, normal salad and rye bread and for lunch this was more than filling. I had a veal sandwich on panini bread with potato salad and normal salad with a huge side of sauerkraut. The piece of veal was very large and filling. Supposedly dinnertime portions are even bigger!
In terms of beer selection they do offer most of the bigger named German beers, but only in bottle. Aleen enjoyed her Paulaner Weissbier (wheat beer) and I had their strong beer, which went well with the food.
We went in November, which is the downtime for Fenelon Falls as most of the tourists come in the summer time. On this day, the chef (from Munich) was the only person in the restaurant and we were the only patrons at the time, but during the summer months it is a completely different story as the restaurant normally has a 30-minute wait for tables and of course more service staff. The wintertime can be so dead that the restaurant sometimes even closes for the months of January and February, so call ahead if you plan on coming during winter.
If you ever happen to be in the Kawartha region of Ontario, come by Fenelon Falls for a nice stroll and be pleasantly surprised by some fine German cuisine.
