Located about an 1.25 hours from Cancun and about 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen, one of the more popular attractions is Xel-Ha (the place where the waters are born), a large "eco-park" consisting of a large fresh/salt water inlet attached to the Gulf of Mexico and a tropical forest. Some of the activities available are snorkeling, snuba, relaxing on the beach or hiking through the tropical terrain.
One of the more popular activities is the lazy river, where one can sit on an inner tube and let the natural current move you along. Along the way there are stops where one can cliff jump or try a balancing act across a rope bridge. There are also underwater caves or cenotes that you can explore.
There is also an area for an additional cost, where one can swim with the dolphins. Instructors guide you along and help you enjoy your experience as these animals gently swim by you and play with you.
Most things are provided to make your day an enjoyable one. Lockers, towels, life jackets, snorkel equipment and (for cost) snuba equipment. If you choose the all inclusive package, there are plenty of food and drink options to keep you energized while here.
One tip is if you are here only for a half day, account for about 1.5 hours on the lazy river so that you have enough time to enjoy. Then you can spend the rest of the time exploring and eating.
Many of the hotels in the area offer daily packages. Both full day and half day packages are available. The half day packages usually are combined with a trip to the Mayan Ruins at Tulum.
Overall, if the weather is nice, this is a great place to go with the kids (or to act like a kid) to enjoy the day or half day. It has everything you need if you enjoy the water and sun.
