Probably the most famous of all the lakes in Banff National Park, if not all of the Canadian Rockies, is none other than Lake Louise. Located right next to the Chateau Lake Louise, the grand hotel and lake is located at the end of Lake Louise Drive, less than 10 minutes off of Highway 1. There is plenty of parking available but it fills up fast. Even in September we had trouble finding a spot. Weekends of course are even worse.

Lake Louise is larger than Moraine Lake. About 2km long and 70m deep, the glacial fed blue waters of Lake Louise cannot be missed. As with many lakes in the region, the colour is caused by the reflection of light off of the tiny particles of "rock flour" (glacial silt) found in the water. This comes from the surrounding mountains' melting glaciers. Do not think of swimming in the beautiful waters though, as Lake Louise is one of the coldest in the region at a cool 4 degrees Celsius.

Being one of the main attractions in the area, the shoreline can get busy and crowded. Consider avoiding the crowd by taking the shoreline trail along the northern side of the lake through the forest. It offers some magnificent views of Victoria Glacier and the surrounding mountains. For those looking for some more serious hikes, there are plenty of options, including a trail that leads up to the famous Lake Agnes Teahouse. For these hikes, come prepared with proper footwear and other hiking essentials.

If hiking is not your thing but you are still looking for some activity while taking in the beauty around you, consider renting a canoe at the nearby boathouse. You probably won't be the only one on the waters regardless of the weather, but the lake is big enough to safely enjoy the experience. If you are budget conscious, you don't need to canoe here, the rates will be cheaper elsewhere as a lot of different lakes offer canoeing in the area. However, if you can, it is a great workout and you will be rewarded with great views of the area and the Chateau looking back. One hour rentals are the norm, and trust us, you will need it as the time just flies.

There are plenty of things to see and do here. You can easily spend an half day here, if not a full day hiking and/or canoeing along the aqua waters. If you happen to get hungry, the Chateau has a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat. Either way, whatever you decide, enjoy one of the treasures of the Canadian Rockies.
